Community Guidelines

ecoText is a broad and diverse platform, which hosts educational content from a multitude of perspectives. We strive to create a community of inclusion and diversity and an open and collaborative environment for our users to engage freely. We support freedom of speech and want everyone to have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions. Consequently, the User Content on our Platform may include a number of different and opposing opinions and viewpoints to read about and discuss openly. This may at times result in User Content that is controversial or objectionable to others. We do not want to limit any thoughts or opinions unless they are hateful, harmful, or otherwise violate our Terms of Use or these Community Guidelines. We are not in any case responsible for any User Content.

User Content Requirements

User Content must have educational value, including by teaching readers about historical or current events, or different ways of thinking and living.

We do NOT allow:

  • User Content or behavior that threatens, bullies, intimidates or harasses others.

  • hate or discrimination against any individual or group of individuals, including on the basis of age, caste, disability, ethnicity, sex/gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, nationality, race, immigration status, religion, being a victim of a major violent event, or veteran status.

  • User Content or behavior that encourages violence or incites harm.

  • User Content or behavior that encourages terrorist activity, human trafficking, or other organized crime.

  • User Content or behavior that violates any law, rule, or regulation, or any rights of any third party, including privacy rights, publicity rights, and intellectual property rights.

  • User Content or behavior that is fraudulent, deceiving, or misleading, including any User Content consisting of content that was manipulated from its original form in a manner that makes it deceiving or misleading.

  • any abuse of the Platform, including spamming of comments and replies (e.g., repeated comments within one minute).

  • We allow sensitive or graphic User Content (including User Content that can be harmful to minors) only when it belongs to a text that is meant to educate or enlighten readers.

Our Enforcement Philosophy and Reporting

Whether we take any action with respect to any User Content is entirely up to the discretion of the ecoText team; however, you may report suspected violations to us by sending us an email at hello@ecoText.co or call us at 617.449.7364. When you report a violation, we may contact you for more information, but we are not obligated to.

When we decide on whether or not to take action, and what action we might take, we consider a number of factors. These include:

  • whether the incident was directed towards a particular group of individuals or a protected group with malicious intent

  • whether a violation may be harmful or dangerous

  • the severity of the violation

  • whether it is the first violation or a repeated violation of a particular user

  • whether the User Content may have educational value, be newsworthy, or be in the public interest

Context is also important in our decision, and the consequences of violations may vary. In some circumstances, we may decide not to take action even if certain User Content may technically violate one or more of our requirements, i.e., if there is also educational value if it is newsworthy, or otherwise in the public interest. Our enforcement actions will be determined on a case-by-case basis, but for example, they may include:

  • warning someone for a first violation

  • banning someone from the Platform in the case of repeated violations

  • banning certain functions or access to portions of the Platform

  • temporarily banning a user’s ability to comment in the event of potentially spamming a comment

  • removing User Content

  • notifying a violator’s school or professor

  • notifying law enforcement

For the avoidance of doubt, (1) nothing in these Community Guidelines limits our rights in the main terms of the Terms of Use; and (2) in the event of any conflict between these Community Guidelines and the main terms of the Terms of Use, the main terms of the Terms of Use will prevail.
